Guest Post: Seek Love Thrive: The Power of Small

Feeling Small?

I love this post by Clare at Seek Love Thrive. It is just what we need when feeling overwhelmed by world events, or just life itself.  It's a beautiful reminder that we don't have to feel helpless, we just have to do what we can when we can.  Small can be meaningful.  Small can be powerful.  Small is where it's at.  I hope you like it as much as I do and that you'll be inspired to dream big, but start small.

Guest Post: Seek Love Thrive: The Power of Small

Life has been feeling pretty overwhelming recently. Personally, nationally and internationally, there's lots of BIG stuff going on. Have you noticed? Conflicts. Referendums. Budgets. Viruses.

It’s the kind of stuff that makes you feel insignificant. How on earth can little ol’ me make a difference in a world full of people who seem determined to take offence, misunderstand and generally make everyone around them miserable? When they’re pushing their own agendas so hard there’s no room for anyone else’s ideas, needs or desires?

When life feels too big to cope with, the best thing I’ve found to do is to breath deeply… let my shoulders drop… and remember that small is powerful.

We can’t help everyone, but everyone can help someone – Ronald Regan

Small might not change THE world, but it could change SOMEONE’S world. Small is a moment of defiance, a battle cry against the rat race, 24 hour connectivity and social indifference. It’s throwing the stone into the pond and waiting for the ripples.

Small is smiling at a stranger. It's asking someone how they are and really listening to the answer. It's saying good morning to the old lady at the end of your street.

Small is buying local. Not just made-in-Australia local, but round-the-corner local. It's buying honey from the cafe that keeps bees, going direct to the farmer for veggies and making sure your eggs are free range.

Small is holding hands with your lover, it's cuddles and giggles and kisses and tickles.

Small is going to the swings before dinner. It's walking there at toddler-pace and touching every single flower en route.

Small is saving the last chocolate biscuit for your partner because you know their day has been worse than yours. It's sending handwritten thank you notes and letters 'just because'.

Small is using the best china to eat takeaway noodles and drinking champagne out of cracked mugs.

Small is taking two minutes to sign that petition on change.org. It’s sending old towels to your local animal shelter or volunteering to clear rubbish from a local reserve.

Small is a celebration – a celebration of YOUNESS, of your ONLYNESS. Small is recognising that each and every person on this planet is valuable and precious and talented and worthy.

Small is strong. Small is powerful. Small is everything.

Now its your turn – switch off the news and do something small to make your world a better place. Start your own ripples - I'd love to hear about them in the comments.

  1. Great post! I love small things. Small, surprising or regular things make my day. Letting people in before you at the check-out or in busy traffic merging conditions. Saying I love you at the most random of times. Filling up empty water bottles ready for the gym. Definitely smiling at strangers. Wheeling in the rubbish bin for your neighbour. Cooking a favourite meal when you know someone's had a bad day. x

  2. I love this comment Karen! Yes! How good is it when you let someone in at the supermarket checkout when they are not expecting it. And being courteous on the road. These small things. You know, it's probably as much about human connection as anything else, isn't it? Living mindfully and compassionately, with a bit of kindness thrown in. Small things. Big impact. x
